A Mattress has several properties about itself that you might have to experiment with to get the perfect match for your needs. One facet is pretty easy to decide on, though. The size of a mattress is pretty much a property of how tall you are, whether you share the mattress with someone, or how much sprawl space you need.
So if you’re looking for a mattress and haven’t yet figured out the size, an easy way to estimate it is mentioned and accounted below. All you need to know is your own height and the height and sprawl space preferences of the ones you’re going to be sharing your bed with.
Twin Size Mattress
Ideal for: Kids, people of short stature
Variant: Twin Extra Long, best for small bedrooms, dorms and camping trips
Twin Mattresses are usually meant for one person, and can be a bit short for people of average height. They’re great for kids, and you can also lay them on the floor in your living room or the balcony for some cozy seating. They’re not always the best investments, however; children will grow out of them.
Full Size Mattress
Ideal for: solo sleepers, smaller rooms, older bed builds
A Full Size might sound accommodating, but it isn’t the biggest available. Given our mattress size grades haven’t changed over 50 years when the average bed was smaller, just like the average bedroom, than their current counterparts, a full size is really more like a 3/4th size of the biggest mattress size out there. That said, a full size is pretty great to put in a smaller room, or if you like to toss and turn a lot at night and need the extra space. A lot of couples use it too, though many prefer to go for a bigger size since they’re largely in the same price range. They also might not be the best size for a tall person.
Queen Size Mattress
Ideal for: The average size bedroom, couples, small hotels, guest rooms
Queen Size mattresses are pretty common in the market, since they’re the most frequently bought and also understood to be the best for most needs. They fit couples comfortably, and also solo sleepers who love some sprawl space. Queen Mattresses fit wonderfully in most houses built recently. There are a lot of grades you can get, and at a variety of prices.
King Size Mattress
Ideal for: Tall people. Big rooms, Hotels
Variant: California King, for uncommonly tall people.
King Size is pretty huge, and you probably need a huge bedroom to aesthetically accommodate one. But it is great for tall people, those with bigger bodies, or couples and people who sleep with pets. Hotels often go for this size, since they accommodate most people irrespective of their heights or sleeping habits. You’re probably going to find it hard to place it in a small room, but necessity must trump visual appeal.
The mattress size you choose should depend of not just your height, but also of how much you like to sprawl, how many people usually sleep on the mattress, and the size of the room you want to sleep in. There are options in all sorts of price ranges for each size, so you can have your pick.
